It is reported that Epistar has recently indicated that it will display a 25 micron diameter Mini LED product for RGB fine pitch display package in 2018 Touch Taiwan, Taipei, Taiwan.
According to industry sources, the 40-micron Mini LED produced by Epistar is being validated by both Chinese and Korean manufacturers for indoor and outdoor fine-pitch displays, and is expected to begin production in the third quarter of 2018.
Currently, the smallest size LED in a fine pitch display is 60 microns. Using a 40 micron Mini LED chip can reduce the pitch to 0.6-1.0 mm, but the cost is even higher, because for the same size display, the fine pitch display uses 5-10 times the number of chips of the ordinary display.
For the 25 micron Mini LED chip, there is still a technical bottleneck for massive transfer. Epistar uses a pick-and-place mass transfer technology to mass produce 25 micron chips, but production costs are still too high. However, sources said that customers hope that Epistar will be able to produce 25 micron Mini LED products in the fourth quarter of 2018.
In addition, there is news that in the second half of 2018, Epistar will begin to produce Mini LED products for 27-inch gaming LCD display panels and 100-inch panel backlights.
